The 1971 “No S” Jefferson nickel is the only example in this long running series that is without it’s intended mint mark. Far fewer than 1,000 of these examples are believed to exist making this particular proof set a very scarce find. This five-piece set is still in its original hard plastic case and box as it was issued from the United States mint. Steely grey surfaces and cameo subjects could make this modern rarity a good candidate for grading at one of the major services (ck)?

Breen-6138, small head. 3 graded MS-63 PL, 7 higher at NGC. Evidently, the small head subvariety was struck off of one die-marriage although Breen cataloged two. The 1834 is readily available as a type representative in most grades, but with the highly coveted prooflike designation, the population falls very rapidly. A quick glance is sufficient to gather in the gorgeous cameo contrast seen for this choice coin, although the reverse fields are set aglow with some additional royal gold accents.
