Zee's Densities Collection. Impairments place a damper on this 3-dollar duo, but how often does one find an auction lot with two certified examples? Included are: 1854 (delicate hairlines subtly traverse the lower portrait, erasing a few contact marks), and 1874 (glittering brightly as is typical of previously edge-mounted examples). Lot #686 - 1898 PCGS MS-65DMPL

74 graded MS-65 DMPL, 27 higher at PCGS. Even earlier strikes than what is seen here for 1898 have earned "UDM" at ANACS in years past but there is no question about the raving eye-appeal of this utterly prooflike example. The contrast may not be as strong as some but the portraits float over ice-water mirrors on either side. The reverse seems a trifle better detailed than the obverse, both sides being nicely struck overall.
