Gold $5-Liberty Head Half Eagle
Large date, large letters. 1842-D wrangles with 1861-D as a contender for the rarest Dahlonega half-eagle, and a high-grade survivor of any description will be in demand by astute collectors. ANACS claims this AU sharpness example to be cleaned, and indeed, glossy lemon-yellow shows across both sides, accompanied by obvious hairlines in the obverse lower right field. Perhaps as important as anything, the surface actually displays a lot fewer abrasions than typical for a southern mint gold coin.

Attractive and obviously choice, both sides exhibit unusually bright luster and a highly appealing admixture of lavender-yellow and steely lilac toning. The reverse shows crisp delineation of the eagle's talons and feathers, but the obverse stars have soft centers overall.
