Gold $2.50-Liberty Head Quarter Eagle
Mintage: 2823. 10 graded XF-40, 26 higher at PCGS. Charlotte and Dahlonega have earned their reputations for rare emissions, but Philadelphia struck even fewer quarter-eagles in 1842, yet its specimens are actually valued lower than those of either southern mint. Here is an utterly delightful example sporting faintly mustard patina with greyish accents. Softness seen throughout derives from honest wear only, the only contact being a small nick in the reverse right field. Estimates suggest less than 60 examples of 1842 surviving through today.

Included are: 1838 Zs-OM (chalky white overall with a cut in the reverse right field, but surprisingly lustrous), and 1843 Mo-MM (fabulously original and boasting burgundy-violet and rose-orange toning on the obverse, along with cyan-gold on the reverse). There is evidence of heat treatment with residues which is a common and stable industry practice. The vivid center stone is highlighted with 12 round brilliant diamonds weighing approximately .50 cttw, SI1 clarity, G-H color. Ring size 6.5, 1.9 dwt.
