Quarter Dollars-Standing Liberty
A group of Standing Liberty quarters was recently extracted from the consignor's Dansco collection, as all the other pieces are circulated. Included are: 1917-D type-2 (MS-62 and extremely original toning that looks much like mint-set patina), 1919 (UNC/FH but showing hazy surfaces), 1925 (Ch BU), 1926-D (UNC but not well struck and showing album color), and 1928 (Ch BU/FH and with attractive turquoise iridescence clinging to the devices. 134 graded MS-64, 32 higher at NGC. Long recognized as a strike-rarity within the series, one might not be aware of that reputation when examining only this boldly defined and cleanly struck example. Excellent definition down the Indian's braid, across the top of his head and an unusually sharp horn and tail (for the date) all speak to the primary reason a specialist will want to pursue this nickel. That said, the cataloger suspects the surface has been coated with a thin layer of protectant which creates a slightly glossy effect.
