Lot #462 - 1897-O PCGS MS-61
Gold $10-Liberty Head Eagle
Mintage: 42,500. Heavier abrasions thump the reverse while overall, both sides show a number of the bagmarks expected of the date. 1897-O is not actually rare despite the lower mintage, but certified mint-state examples prove difficult to find at PCGS. A glittering example with occasional greyish crumbles that suggest a non-cleaned surface.

A slightly subdued appearance undoubtedly derives from finely matte-textured surfaces that seemingly retain no luster. The obverse showcases exceptionally sharp definition while the reverse may not quite reach the same level of sharpness over a couple of leaves toward the left. Honey-brown overall and showing darker inflections here and there on both sides.

I have to admit, this one won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but you will have to admit that it’s pretty darn cool! The center has a precious orangey marquise coral cabochon. There is a freeform, bezel set fossilized ammonite stone and the piece is completed with a elongated cabochon identified as rutilated quartz. None of the stones have indications of polymers or dyes, Stone Group Laboratories report #240827R-SJ. This piece has a pin on the back and also opens so it can be added to chain. Dimensions 4" x 1.5", 26.2 dwt.
