Lot #398 - 1842-C Large Date PCGS XF-45
Gold $5-Liberty Head Half Eagle
Large Date. 31 graded XF-45, 44 higher at PCGS. Identified by noticing that "2" in the date rests closer to the rim than to the bust and considered somewhat less rare than the small-date logotype. Very subtle greyish-canary deposits rest within the central area of all fields, and contrasts well with the underlying glint of Charlotte gold. While every single star except the first unexpectedly retains full dentilation, inevitable contact marks across the center of the portrait and spreading out left of the mintmark speak to the level of wear, as does the obvious loss of intricacy to circulation.

First is 1893 with a flurry of tiny bag abrasions on the obverse, fewer on the reverse and very good luster over a tremendous strike. 1897 displays fewer abrasions overall than its companion but also shows a moderate abrasion right on the cheek.
