Lot #395 - 1834 Classic, Plain 4 PCGS AU-55
Gold $5-Classic Head Half Eagle
McCloskey 4-C (R.4), block 8, plain 4, second head. 1834 marked the year when the mint changed design for the half-eagle, as the intrinsic value of each coin made it profitable (over face value) to melt them down for bullion. 4-C can most quickly be attributed by noticing a die crack that ejects from the top of Liberty's modified portrait. Noticeable flowline texture nearly touching the rims speaks also to later dies.

Jaw-dropping luster and a fairly accurate strike beg for the gem grade level, staved off by delicate scattered abrasions. A couple of obverse stars are not quite fully formed but the ear of corn shows most intended details.

The pear, trapezoid and round cut diamonds weigh an estimated 1.50 cttw, SI1-I1 clarity, H-J color. Past the dragon’s head is scale-like bracelet with hidden clasp. Length Approx 7”, 71.9 dwt.
