  • Lot #840 - 1916-D Mercury PCGS AU-53
  • Dimes-Mercury
  • Even to a specialized collector who does not dabble at all in Mercury dimes, the 1916-D requires no introduction, since it has never had challengers for key-date status (ignoring esoteric "grade rarity" discussions) and is famous on multiple levels. The surface of this AU-53 example genuinely has the lustrous quality of an AU-55 coin, and without question, pewter-tan patina draping over the surface appears to be fully original. Therefore, one must probe other aspects of the grading process to figure out why a choice grade wasn't in play. Closer inspection reveals delicate, fluttering hairlines in the obverse right field, and additional superficial hairlining on the portrait, as well as similar activity within the reverse fields. Fortunately, long placement within a correct numismatic environment has permitted the surface to an antiqued appearance that so many enthusiasts covet, and absolutely nowhere can one locate even the tiniest abrasion.

  • Frosty white devices clash with highly mirrored fields throughout this Capital plastics display set of fifteen consecutive United States proof sets.  This run spans from 1950 through 1963 and includes and additional 1960 set that has a small date variety. Most every nickel offers a pleasing steely grey appeal and all but two cents are fiery red examples.  The two outliers are the 1950 and 1960 small date Lincoln cents that offer wonderful toning displays that may be worthy of being sent in for certification (ck)?
