  • Lot #874 - 1804 XF details/corrosion removed
  • Large Cents-Draped Bust
  • Sheldon-266, die-state IV, the 1804 date obviously a key and even more elusive due to how many collectors pursue S-266 by die-state. For this bold example, rim breaks show plainly over RTY and MERIC. Dies are rotated by about 20 degrees for a coin that makes the cataloger's grade of [XF/corrosion removed], and the surface has been rather nicely recolored with chestnut-brown patina that has olive inflections on the reverse.

  • Lot #357 - 1849 NGC MS-61
  • Hammer: $2,700
  • Gold $2.50-Liberty Head Quarter Eagle
  • Mintage: 23,294. 14 graded MS-61, 9 higher at NGC. Delicately abraded overall and showing feathery hairlines in the fields, original as-struck flashy character remains visible nevertheless. A relatively poor survival rate amplifies the effects of lower mintage, making the 1849 an unheralded scarcity at the mint-state grade level.
