  • Lot #414 - 1879-S NGC MS-64
  • Gold $5-Liberty Head Half Eagle
  • 7 graded MS-64, which ties for highest graded at NGC. PCGS suggests five coins grade higher in their population report. Technically, 1879-S is not a scarce date but obviously, the set collector will be hard-pressed to locate a stronger candidate for a registry. Overall light hairlining limits the grade.

  • Lot #334 - 1853 PCGS MS-64+ CAC
  • Hammer: $1,450
  • Gold Dollars-Liberty Head
  • 1853 is a year replete with a nice variety of type coins, most of them approachable including the 1853 gold dollar. Here is an enchanting example that has all the makings of a gem, but at a much more affordable price given the "plus" grade assessed by PCGS. Opulent, velvety sheen and a delightful strike contribute to visual appeal, the only detriment (that the cataloger could find) being a few trivial hairlines sweeping across the portrait.
