Gold $5-Liberty Head Half Eagle
Large date, large letters. 1842-D wrangles with 1861-D as a contender for the rarest Dahlonega half-eagle, and a high-grade survivor of any description will be in demand by astute collectors. ANACS claims this AU sharpness example to be cleaned, and indeed, glossy lemon-yellow shows across both sides, accompanied by obvious hairlines in the obverse lower right field. Perhaps as important as anything, the surface actually displays a lot fewer abrasions than typical for a southern mint gold coin.

Super Thompson Collection. Sharpness on the cusp of mint-state gets a couple of disclaimers for the ANACS pieces. This trio may be described as follows: 1921 (plentiful hairlines from cleaning over a typical strike), 1928 (cleaned but only moderately so and still retaining substantial luster), and a second 1928 (blatantly looks mint-state in defiance of NGC's grade and shows a bit of nicer peripheral orange toning). Three coin lot.
