Lot #395 - 1834 Classic, Plain 4 PCGS AU-55
Gold $5-Classic Head Half Eagle
McCloskey 4-C (R.4), block 8, plain 4, second head. 1834 marked the year when the mint changed design for the half-eagle, as the intrinsic value of each coin made it profitable (over face value) to melt them down for bullion. 4-C can most quickly be attributed by noticing a die crack that ejects from the top of Liberty's modified portrait. Noticeable flowline texture nearly touching the rims speaks also to later dies.

Newcomb-9, a somewhat common die-marriage that can show up in various interesting die-states. The NGC insert covers up a portion of the rim where a small cud eventually develops but it isn't readily apparent in this instance. The glossy ebony-brown surface is actually not as unattractive as is often implied by the MS-61 numeric grade level, and neither side displays much by way of contact.

This beauty of a coin pendant has a $10 gold liberty, AU condition, surrounded by shallow cut square rubies with a rich red transparent color and a twisted cable border. There is a one part of the bezel that is slightly bent but it doesn’t make this one any less pretty! Dimensions 2.5” x 1.75”, 18.3 dwt.
