  • Lot #461 - 1907 NGC PR-64
  • Gold $10-Liberty Head Eagle
  • Mintage: 74. 18 graded PR-64, 4 higher at NGC with population statistics certainly inflated by resubmissions. But "grade" is not what makes a proof Liberty eagle so special -- it's the scarcity and beauty of these pieces that collectors clamor for. All observed proofs for 1907 have an interesting anomaly in that the outermost points of the sixth through tenth stars are blunted, while in the vicinity is evidence of extensive die polishing, so it is possible the dies for the final emission of Liberty proofs were hurriedly prepared for the excessively low production run. Die lapping also weakened the extreme right end of the scroll on the reverse. From the standpoint of actual grade characteristics, few graded PR-64 with no designation will challenge the obvious attractions seen here. Far fewer hairlines than expected escape into the fields although an array of three delicate rows of tiny surface nicks lurk in the obverse right field. Both sides also feature distinguished cameo effect even if the contrast does not quite warrant special designation. A fragile lint mark dangling from "9" in the date delivers a possible pedigree marker for future reference.

  • Benjamin J. Collection. Cleaned, but not at all to an overbearing extent. Indeed, the coin could be placed into an album so as to recover some better color. Adverse effects subdue mint luster only modestly, allowing one to appreciate a decent level of cartwheel energy.

  • Gold $5-Liberty Head Half Eagle
  • Cataloger's grade: [AU/cleaned]. Only vaguely cleaned and as a result, either side shows myriad delicate, feathery hairlines. Despite the mint of origin, both sides display exceptional detailing and even hints of luster near the rims.
