  • Lot #324 - 1842 PCGS XF-40
  • Gold $2.50-Liberty Head Quarter Eagle
  • Mintage: 2823. 10 graded XF-40, 26 higher at PCGS. Charlotte and Dahlonega have earned their reputations for rare emissions, but Philadelphia struck even fewer quarter-eagles in 1842, yet its specimens are actually valued lower than those of either southern mint. Here is an utterly delightful example sporting faintly mustard patina with greyish accents. Softness seen throughout derives from honest wear only, the only contact being a small nick in the reverse right field. Estimates suggest less than 60 examples of 1842 surviving through today.

  • VAM-5 is perhaps most readily identified by finding a little bit of schmutz on the rim below "18" in the date. A tremendous example, this ice-planchet very-gem dollar features a smooth, untroubled cheek and a spectacularly clean reverse that joyously flourishes gleaming quicksilver luster.

This is a genuine statement piece with a design that is big and bold and features large spider web turquoise cabs that appear to be from the Kingman mine. Excellent condition with a dark patina to the metal. 5.59 troy ounces.
