  • Lot #873 - 1803 100/000 PCGS VF-25
  • Large Cents-Draped Bust
  • Sheldon-249, 100/000 fraction, and apparently die state II with the "mumps" die defect attached to Liberty's jaw. From a commercial standpoint, sharpness may be slightly better than VF-25, this offset by a rather generous helping of small circulation marks strewn across the obverse. Decent eye appeal unfolds on both sides due to much nicer powder-chocolate patina that shows remarkably few distractions other than those abrasions.

  • Lot #458 - 1839 Large Letters, Head of 1838 NGC AU-55
  • Hammer: $7,500
  • Gold $10-Capped Bust to Right Eagle
  • Mintage: 25,801 for a variety appropriately known as the "old portrait" obverse. The design compared side by side with that of latter years is distinctly different and leaner by comparison. The right edge of "9" in the date shows recutting sometimes mistaken as 98, and the portrait has a swirl of hair laying across the ear, rather than above it.

An untroubled example with minimal luster, the surface exhibits mostly mustard-yellow accents over pale golden color typical of the era. While rather well struck overall, five points of wear, likely joined by limits of then-current technology kept away perfect delineation of the wavy hair at the top of the portrait. The eagle's feathers are individually sculpted, however. The coin overall shows only expectant small abrasions -- not a single major mark requires separate mention.
