Mintage figures are difficult to understand, even given the initial production of 3700 pieces, since it has long been rumored that hundreds were lost after having been disposed of in Manila Bay. For the enthusiast used to the way bronze reacts with environmental effects, this is one outstanding beauty is it unquestionably glows with olive-gold and brown aspects. Commissioned in 1904 by then president Teddy Roosevelt, Augustus Saint-Gaudens forever left his mark on American coinage with his legendary double eagle design.
