  • Lot #896 - 1856 Flying Eagle NGC PR-45
  • Small Cents-Flying Eagle
  • Snow-5, identifiable right away by noting a point on the bottom of "U" in UNITED, and a tiny dot inside the upper left serif of "N" in CENT. A sensational-for-the-grade Flying eagle cent garners the Scotsman Cataloger's Choice Award almost by virtue of pristine surface quality alone, with smooth placid fields surrounding beautifully high relief design elements. Deep, dusky olive-brown color could not possibly be more ideal for a lightly worn 1856, yet circulation was kind, imparting absolutely no distracting marks or spots. One ancient, faint hairline descends from "M' in AMERICA but blends completely into the surface.

  • Robert Michaels Collection. Logan-McCloskey-1 (R.6). A very rare die-marriage, the cataloger looked at as many examples as could be found, and could discover very few others in such a late die-state. In addition to the die clashing seen on many, this example displays a fabulous die-crack extending from the ear, through the forehead and up between "TY". Add to this the discovery in such outstanding high grade (relatively speaking) and one can only hope the coin ends up in the cabinet of a researcher, or true fan of the half-dime series. Modest luster emanates from the peripheral areas where delightful chartreuse-lime and cobalt have seized hold, while lavender-grey and peach hues occupy much of the central areas. A small, isolated dig at the bottom of the portrait may be the lone grade determinant.
