Included are: 1879-O (very good strike over exquisite, white fine-textured matte frost surfaces), 1897-S (astounding windmill energy on pure-white mint frost), and 1904 (another very good strike but the cheek disturbed by a number of tiny bagmarks). K.R. Consignment. HB-50, EP-6, R.6. JOSEPH L BATES / FANCY GOODS / 129 WASHINGTON St / BOSTON. Cataloger's grade: [very-fine] at the bare minimum. Possibly choice due to lovely, even powdery brass patina, the eye-appeal is improved a little by the stamp being better centered than some; U.S. POSTAGE is mostly legible beneath the upper rim of the encasing. All Joseph Bates encased stamps are rare, the 1-cent pieces being the only reasonably collectable denomination. Quality of the original mica is quite outstanding for the type, showing a faint hairline scratch but minimum visual impediments otherwise.
