Lot #798 - 1840-O No Drapery PCGS AU-53

Quarter Dollars-Liberty Seated
6 graded AU-53, 48 higher at PCGS. Scarcer of the two obverse varieties for 1840-O, and very difficult to locate in mint-state such that all properly graded AU examples are desirable. Only minimal luster remains on the obverse while the reverse provides more energy, the whole wrapped up in slightly dense yolk-grey surrounded by deeper bluish hue.

Scott Laiter Collection. 41 graded MS-61, 37 higher at NGC. While more available as a date within the series, 1868 is at least not one of the truly common emissions. Without aid of a loupe, MS-61 almost seems too low given the lovely semi-flashy luster often seen for the date. Traces of lavender-gold show on both sides.
