  • Lot #132 - 1882 $50 Brown Back - Joplin, MO Charter #3841 - VF/stain
  • US Currency-National Bank Notes
  • The First National Bank of Joplin, Missouri. An extremely elusive bank, this very scarce high-denomination large was issued before Joplin's first national bank went under in 1923. The cataloger found only nine extant, this example still showing faded but legible brown signatures and three broad margins. A remarkable opportunity, especially for a note that was reported to us as having never been certified.

The exquisite strike and definition foretell the glory years of the California mint's Morgan dollar production over the next few years, and both sides exhibit unexpectedly vibrant cartwheel effect despite the not-quite-choice grade level.
