Gold $2.50-Indian Head Quarter Eagle
Strong mintmark -- indeed about as bold of a "D" as one will ever find on this key quarter-eagle. So early seems to be the die-state that one wished it would be possible to view the edge outside of the gloopy PCGS insert. Both sides exhibit diminished luster, perhaps because of denser carrot-gold patina, and a staccato pinscratch sneaks down the forward part of the Indian's headdress, assuredly helping to determine the grade.

Grand National Collection. L&M-37, KM#Y31, no dot after DOLLAR, extra flame, Tientsin mint. Many consider this the premier silver dollar within the Imperial series and they often come rather nicely produced, as can be inferred by marvelous, vibrant spinning luster seen on both sides. Indeed, the grade seems almost too low at this point until one discovers scattered, fleeting hairlines on both sides. Exacting strike quality at the denticles and virtually all of the dragon's scales speak to a rather decent strike. A delightful coin with lovely, underrated cascading eye-appeal.
