  • Lot #440 - 1909 NGC MS-65
  • Gold $5-Indian Head Half Eagle
  • 65 graded MS-65, 9 higher at NGC. Common in most UNC grades, this is an exceptional specimen for 1909, featuring an exquisite strike and delightful, lustrous matte surface texture that place it squarely into the gem grade category. These are expectations of this well-produced Philadelphia emission but what sets this example apart from most is the near absence of post-production surface abrasions, consisting of a minute nick on the cheek and three very shallow scuffs above the eagle's neck. Other present abrasions were present prior to striking. Ideal yellow-gold color and adorable eye-appeal.

  • Lot #457 - 1929 PCGS MS-64+ CAC
  • Hammer: $52,750
  • Gold $5-Indian Head Half Eagle
  • 17 graded MS-64+, 14 (all MS-65) higher at PCGS. The final entry into the Indian half-eagle also turns out to be one of the most difficult to obtain at the gem grade level. In some respects, 1929 could be considered the "easiest key" or the "most difficult semi-key" depending on how one delineates rarity. Probably only six other dates prove more elusive to collectors at this level.

Strong luster checks off the first item on the list of accolades, followed immediately by what appears to be unexpectedly and pleasantly original color, including medium golden iridescence joined by much grapefruit-orange accenting. A very good but not quite excellent strike is mostly responsible for all that nice energy, but the grade gets held back slightly by two tiny nicks on the brow and another smaller nick on the lip.

  • Hammer: $1,600
  • Jewelry-Watches
  • This 18K pocket watch has a beautiful movement marked “E.KOEN, GENEVE, No 77628”. Unfortunately, the chiming mechanism doesn't seem to work. On the inside lid it is engraved “Fr. Stanley Goodwin, Christmas 1891, H.R. EKEGREN GENEVA” and the outside back lid has a fancy monogram of “C.H.S.” Winds, sets and runs. 72.9 dwt.
