Gold $2.50-Liberty Head Quarter Eagle
Mintage: 2823. 10 graded XF-40, 26 higher at PCGS. Charlotte and Dahlonega have earned their reputations for rare emissions, but Philadelphia struck even fewer quarter-eagles in 1842, yet its specimens are actually valued lower than those of either southern mint. Here is an utterly delightful example sporting faintly mustard patina with greyish accents. Softness seen throughout derives from honest wear only, the only contact being a small nick in the reverse right field. Estimates suggest less than 60 examples of 1842 surviving through today.

A smooth, nearly matte brightness characteristic of the $10 Indian gold type lunges through the holder. Extremely fine die striations neatly coat fields. A series of nicks are present, most noticeable on face and eagle wings.
