Cheddars de Voirs Collection. A remarkable trio of California fractional gold, specifically 25-cent pieces, comprises this PCGS grouping. Included are: BG-727 (astonishingly high grade and blatantly prooflike), BG-728 (drenched in curiously lackluster greenish hue and unusually well struck), and BG-872 (rather outstanding citrus-gold on the obverse and lemon-yellow on the reverse with semi-prooflike reflectivity). Mintage: 23,294. 14 graded MS-61, 9 higher at NGC. Delicately abraded overall and showing feathery hairlines in the fields, original as-struck flashy character remains visible nevertheless. A relatively poor survival rate amplifies the effects of lower mintage, making the 1849 an unheralded scarcity at the mint-state grade level.
