Cheddars de Voirs Collection. A remarkable trio of California fractional gold, specifically 25-cent pieces, comprises this PCGS grouping. Included are: BG-727 (astonishingly high grade and blatantly prooflike), BG-728 (drenched in curiously lackluster greenish hue and unusually well struck), and BG-872 (rather outstanding citrus-gold on the obverse and lemon-yellow on the reverse with semi-prooflike reflectivity). Three coin lot.

Gold $2.50-Classic Head Quarter Eagle
6 graded MS-63, 16 higher at NGC. With 47-thousand pieces struck off a single pair of dies, it's no wonder early strikes can be somewhat prooflike, whereas this mid/later die-state example features smoothly frosted surface texture yet still retains a smidge of flashy aspect. An excellent strike popped up deeply sculpted peripheral stars on the obverse, as well as extremely intricate details on the eagle's claws. After nearly two centuries, the surface offers bright, pale lemon-gold hue with no distractions. The grade appears to be constrained by limited, but visible stray hairlines within each of the major fields
