Gold $5-Liberty Head Half Eagle
FS-301. Perhaps because of the inherent cost of collecting gold coins, varieties are sorely underappreciated, but 1899/899 is one of the best available to collectors and this appears to be an earlier die-state example. The extra loop left of the "8" is plainly visible with a loupe -- some examples of the same repunched date really only show the extra outlines left of the 9s.

Intensely bright with earthquake luster, eye-appeal could not be more brilliantly dazzling for a common date within the series. Not quite perfectly detailed, it would have been difficult to get a premier strike given that both dies show stress fractures toward the rims.
